Podcast Picks: Daily Tech News Show.

Get your tech news every weekday.

A few years ago there was Buzz Out Loud.
There was a daily tech news podcast called Buzz Out Loud from CNet.com hosted by Tom Merritt. It was the first podcast that my wife and I enjoyed. It was funny and insightful. Eventually CNet started to drop its audio podcasts one by one and Tom Merritt left CNet for the Twit.tv Network and hosted their daily news show called Tech News Today.

Not too long ago I listened to Tech News Today.
I was a daily listener to Tech News Today.  The show was hosted by,  +Tom Merritt+iyaz akhtar+Sarah Lane, and produced by +Jason Howell.  It was a great show and then TWIT.TV decided to not renew Tom Merritt's contract, and Iyaz Akhtar has left Twit for CNet. TWIT has decided to take Tech News Today in a different direction which just does not work for me as well as the old Tech New Today.

So Tom Merritt created a new daily tech news show.
The Daily Tech News Show has really filled the gap that the change to Tech News Today left when they made the format change. Tom and his guests cover a large range of tech news, from cell phones to bitcoin and does it well. If you are interested in technology then you should give this podcast a try.

Scorecard
The Rating uses G, PG, PG-13, and R while the other categories use A for the best that I know of,B for good but others might be better,C is average, D below average, and F is just terrible.
  • Rating PG It is hard for anything to get a G rating, but this show is professional and profanity free. You will not have to worry about listening to it while driving the kids to school.
  • Quality A  Tom Merritt is very good at what he does and built his own studio at home for doing Tech News Today. He is using the same studio for the Daily Tech News Show so the quality i very high.
  • Community N/A The show is too new to judge, I have a feeling that it will be a very good community once fully established.
  • Depth A Tom Merritt worked at Tech-TV, CNet, and TWIT.TV he has years of experience reporting on technology and it shows.
  • Entertainment Value B This is a news show, but the news is still presented in a fun and interesting way.
  • Overall A I try to listen to this show every weekday.
How I feel about this Podcast.
I feel that Tom Merritt is one of the best tech journalists around today, his shows are informative, entertaining and unlike so much what passes for journalism he is not inflammatory.  That is not to say he does not have strong opinions but he is willing to listen to all sides of must subjects. I just wish that Tom could get Molly Wood to be his co-host on the show.

Where to get it.
You can subscribe to his podcasts from his webpage, iTunes, and many Android podcast apps.

Podcast Picks: All About Android on the TWIT network.

Hello I am David and I am an Android user.
I have been an Android user for several years now.  All about Android is my favorite Android Podcast. It is not the most geeky podcast, that would have to go to Android Central's podcast but it is entertaining, informative, and frankly fun.

The Hosts.
The current hosts of All About Android, +Jason Howell+Gina Trapani, and +Ron Richards are great at presenting news about Android in a clear and enduser friendly way.  +Eileen Rivera was a founding host of All About Android and I have to say that I really miss her.  Eileen offered an every person view point that I really liked and added great balance to the show.

The Show.
All About Android is broken up into several regular segments.
  • News
  • Voicemail
  • Hardware
  • Email
  • Apps
  • Glassware
  • Android Arena
Out of all of these my favorite is Android Arena. Android Arena is a segment where each host plus any guests bring an app to the arena and the listeners vote on their favorite. It is a great way to find out about great new apps.

Scorecard
The Rating uses G, PG, PG-13, and R while the other categories use A for the best that I know of,B for good but others might be better,C is average, D below average, and F is just terrible.
  • Rating PG Little kids will probably not like this show but there is nothing wrong with the language or content. A big plus is that Jason Howell is a father of a child that is old enough to use a tablet so he has good insights into kids and technology. Gina is also a parent, but her child is still just a baby.
  • Quality A  TWIT is a podcasting network known for high production quality.
  • Community A The community around this podcast is one of the best on the Internet. It actually seems pretty friendly and troll free.
  • Depth A The show does a good job of covering all things Android including the offshoots like GoogleTV, ChromeCast, Chromebooks, and GoogleGlass.
  • Entertainment Value A It is a fun show to watch or listen to as a podcast. The Hosts are funny, knowledgeable, and personable and the arena adds a bit of competition and a good bit of fun to the show.
  • Overall A This is one of my weekly podcasts that I download.

How to get the show.
All About Android is available on iTunes and most Android podcast apps or just go to www.twit.tv/aaa. You can also watch it on YouTube and on your Roku box if you have one.

For more app reviews.
My wonderful wife +Cindy Siebert  does real world Android and iOS app reviews on her blog. Cindy just finished a review of PushBullet for Android.

Podcast Picks: Cordkillers

Cordkillers

+Cordkillers is a podcast about living without cable tv. There tagline is, "Watch what you want, when you want, on any device you please". Each show is composed of several segments. The show is fun and well produced. The hosts +Brian Brushwood and +Tom Merritt are personable, entertaining, and knowledgeable.

Scorecard
The Rating uses G, PG, PG-13, and R while the other categories use A for the best that I know of,B for good but others might be better,C is average, D below average, and F is just terrible.
  • Rating PG Little kids will probably not like this show but there is nothing wrong with the language or content. Brian Brushwood is a father with small children. He knows the importance of parental controls on streaming services and covers those as well as child friendly content.
  • Quality A  +Tom Merritt and +Brian Brushwood have been podcasting for years. The production value is high and the content well thought out.
  • Community A The community around this podcast is one of the best on the Internet. It actually seems pretty friendly and troll free.
  • Depth A The show does a good job of covering both "New Media" and television and movies.
  • Entertainment Value A It is a fun show to watch or listen to as a podcast. The hosts take what could be a dry subject and present it in an interesting and fun way.
  • Overall A I listen to this show every week and even donated to the funding  for the show.

A Little History

Cordkillers is a new show with a long history. Tom Merritt and and Brian Brushwood were hosts of a cord cutting show on the TWiT network called Framerate. When TWiT decided to not renew Tom Merritt's contract, he and Brian Brushwood used the show's format, with some revamping, to create Cordkillers.

How do I feel about this show.

My wife and I were big fans of Framerate on the TWIT network. You can read more about Framerate in the section called A Little History. Cindy and I were very unhappy when the show ended and very excited when Cordkillers started a few weeks ago. Cordkillers is a great replacement for Framerate and a great source for news on the subject of cord cutting. AKA going without cable TV. The only area that this show does not cover well is the use of over the air TV aka using an antenna.  So yes, you should watch this show how you want, when you want, and on whatever device you want.

How to get the show

You may watch Cordkillers on YouTube, you can download and/or subscribe to the show from the Cordkillers website.
